Bastrop Chamber of Commerce to Host Candidate Forums
(Bastrop) – The Bastrop Chamber of Commerce has announced candidate forums to be held next month in preparation for the May 6 election. The Bastrop Chamber represents 730 plus members and more than 7,000 jobs in the Bastrop area.
All forums will be held in the Black Box Theater at the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Performing Arts Center located at 1401 Cedar Street in Bastrop. The forum for city council candidates for Place 3 and 4 will be April 6. School board candidates for Place 3 will be April 10, and mayoral candidates for the City of Bastrop will be April 17. All forums will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, are free and open to the public.
“It’s an exciting time to be part of the greater Bastrop area, and we continue to experience challenges and opportunities for economic growth,” said Becki Womble, President/CEO of the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce. “These times call for us to be more diligent in working together as we advocate for the needs of our community and the entire county. We hope everyone in our community will come to the forums and hear directly from the candidates so that voters can make the most informed decision when they go to the polls.”
Chambers of Commerce have authority under state and federal law to represent their members in public policy debates and may lobby and take positions on actual or proposed legislation. Chambers may also endorse candidates for public offices and/or ballot propositions. The Bastrop Chamber has historically not endorsed political candidates and will not be doing so in the May 6 election, according to Womble.
Candidates for all offices are requested to submit the candidate questionnaire and information to the Chamber by March 13. The deadline for candidate forum participation is March 31.
