Brain Tanning Buckskins (class)
Have you ever wondered how to make deerskins into buckskins? Our ancestors relied heavily on buckskins for clothing, shelter, bedding, and containers. In fact, buckskin was the original fabric. Join us for a two day brain tanning course where you will learn everything you need to know to turn raw hides into supple, beautiful, and useful buckskins. Each student will leave the course with 1/2 to 1/3 of a brain tanned and smoked buckskin hide. This course will delve into both wet scrape and dry scrape methods, and will teach students how to tan hides with brain, eggs, and soap. All materials (hides, brains, and tools) will be provided. Feel free to bring you own hide from home if you like (you can freeze it until the day before class).
